Oral Cancer Detection Study
An oral cancer screening, may save your life!
If you are a heavy smoker or drinker and you are at least 45 years of age, you may qualify to participate in a clinical research study being conducted at the NYU Bluestone Center for Clinical Research.
Your participation will involve one to three visits, which will take place over approximately three weeks. Qualifying participants can be compensated for time and travel expenses.
Approximately 30,000 patients per year are diagnosed with oral cancer in the U.S. (oralcancerfoundation.org), accounting for 3% of all cancers. Known risk factors for this disease include tobacco and alcohol use and age, with 95% of cases occurring after the age of 45 years. The consumption of one alcohol unit per day is estimated to increase the relative risk of cancer by approximately 4 times and surveys demonstrate that between 10% and 20% of the U.S. population has this risk factor. In addition, a history of 10 pack/years of smoking or equivalent tobacco exposure from other sources also increases the risk of oral cancer by approximately 4.
Participation for this clinical research study is based upon age and lifestyle factors. Furthermore, this oral cancer study being conducted at the NYU Bluestone Center for Clinical research requires that participants are 45 years of age or older. Additional study requirements require that participants have a two year history of smoking and/or drinking or are currently heavy smokers and/or drinkers, does not have a prior history of oral cancer, periodontal (gum disease) treatment, oral trauma and/or undergoing orthodontic (braces) treatment.
